“TOO Organized?”
I just love this article, written by fellow NAPO member Lori Marrero. It’s this thing we have in our society about organized being code for “perfect” - it’s NOT true! Being organized doesn’t mean your home looks like House Beautiful all the time, because, uh, we live there.
Before I became a Professional Organizer, I went through a sort of journey of self-awareness with my belongings. It started out as the usual “I can’t take this anymore!”. You might know what I’m talking about: that moment when you look around the room and think, “That’s IT - I am doing something about this room/house/car/whatever!” Then you rush around for a solid day, ruthlessly cleaning out and getting rid of “whatever that was” and at the end of the day you are exhausted, and your room is sparkling, or nearly there. So, a few months go by, and the room is back to where it was. It’s a vicious cycle, but one that doesn’t have to continue.
The other problem some people face (as did I) is the “perfectionism”. If the room can’t be perfect, or you can’t make your papers line up like little soldiers, then forget it. It’s something that can stop you cold in your track of simply making your home or office work for you. But again, it doesn’t have to be that way! Start with small steps everyday. Maybe that means having a place for the bills and recycling the junk mail. Do that everyday, and when you’re comfortable and consistent, add another step. Organizing and simplifying your life isn’t about perfection, it’s about life - YOUR life, and making it your own. It’s about being able to find things when you need them, and being proud of your space. Now THAT’S perfect - perfect for you. ![]()
