Yep, it’s true, I’m a big foodie.  I get weak in the knees over a good extra virgin olive oil or champagne vinegar.  And I positively adore a good red wine and dark chocolate.  So, my husband and I watched Big Night tonight - for the second time.  One of the things I love about the movie is the simplicity of the kitchen, and the food that comes out of it.  And it got me thinking about the kitchen.

Here’s a few tips to help you simplify your kitchen:

1.  Eliminate unitaskers: Unclutter.com just had a great article about unitaskers (asparagus) in particular.  Don’t get me wrong, there are great tools on the market, but hey, just make sure they do more than one thing.

2.  Buy quality tools:  Buy the best quality you can afford.  That means pots, knives, etc.  High quality tools will outlast several sets of lower quality - and you’ll save money in the end, and have less clutter.

3.  Quality ingredients:  Good food tastes better, so patronize your local farmers and buy the best you can.  You and your family won’t be sorry!

4.  Simple food:  There’s no need to get too fancy - unless you want to, of course.  Simple food and simple preparation relieves pressure and stress, and let’s you enjoy cooking and eating with your family.

5.   Zones:  arrange your kitchen around the work triangle: fridge, stove, sink.  Baking and cooking supplies near the stove, dishes close to the sink (or dishwasher), food centrally located.  Put things where you can find them, when you need them.

Simplify your kitchen - make your life easier and get cooking!

Brandie, good post! I agree wholeheartedly! I finally broke down a few years ago and bought good kitchen knives. Wow what a difference. I also bought a bamboo cutting board, which I love. And Unclutterer is right about those dang unitaskers! I admit I have a few myself, such as my breadmaker and lemon zester, but that’s about it that I can think of.

Right on Brandie! I totally agree with you and Monica. Unitaskers are rarely a good idea. And I love my bamboo cutting board too!

Loving the bamboo cutting board! I’m in the market, so I’ll check them out!
